The Polynesian Society was formed in New Zealand in 1892. One of the oldest learned societies in the Southern Hemisphere, its original aim was and is to promote the scholarly study of past and present New Zealand Māori and other Pacific Island peoples and cultures. The Council is currently led by Dr. Marama Muru-Lanning. Its publications include not only the quarterly Journal of the Polynesian Society, but also a monograph series.
