Universities New Zealand - Te Pōkai Tara has three roles:
1. A statutory role as the body primarily responsible for quality assurance matters in respect of universities.
2. A statutory role granting scholarships from money under the control of the New Zealand Vice-Chancellors Committee.
3. Working as a sector to share best practice, to realise efficiencies, and to improve understanding and support for universities – particularly with Government agencies and ministers.
