About Central North Island Blue Duck Conservation Charitable Trust
The Central North Island Blue Duck Charitable Trust was set up to administer and distribute mitigation funding paid by Genesis Energy, to offset the impact of the Tongariro Power Development scheme on whio, or blue duck, a threatened endemic New Zealand species affected by hydroelectric developments within their river habitat. The purpose of the Trust is to support the protection and enhancement of whio populations, primarily but not exclusively within the central North Island. This is achieved through financial support for community groups and organisations undertaking predator control, captive rearing, monitoring and research to benefit whio populations.
