The Araiteuru Marae operates as more than a traditional meeting place; it is a cultural anchor, social facilitator, and economic enabler. Through the integration of tradition, community services, and entrepreneurial activity, it exemplifies the dynamic role of Marae in contemporary Māori society and contributes to Dunedin’s social and cultural landscape.

Araiteuru Marae in Dunedin is a central hub for Māori culture, community, and economy, preserving traditions like te Reo Māori, arts, storytelling, and ceremonies while supporting identity and social cohesion. It hosts educational programs, youth and health initiatives, and intercultural activities, strengthening community networks.

The marae was first mooted in 1927 and discussed among Māori Battalion soldiers during World War II. A meeting of elders and members of the Dunedin Māori community was held on 28 April 1964 with the aim of a facility for all Maori people in the district, whatever their tribal origin. The Araiteuru Marae Council was legally incorporated on 5 January 1976.

Tihei Mauri Ora!

He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata! He tangata! He tangata!

What is the most important thing in the world? It is people! It is people! It is people!
