4 The Purposes are the advancement of religion, specifically the Christian faith, primarily in Edinburgh, but also further afield and in the rest of the world, consistent with 4.1 The teachings of Christ and the Word of God 4.2 The purposes of the Association, which has its basis in the tradition and succession of the Church founded by Dr. William Innes in 1810, is congregational in its form of government, recognises Jesus Christ as its Supreme Head, believing in His continuing presence, and undertakes to manage its own affairs, free from all external ecclesiastical authority, according to His Word. 4.3 The Statement of Foundation Values (as set out in the Appendix): including, without prejudice to the foregoing generality, worship, ministry, mission, witness, prayer, fellowship, education, community service and the provision of activities and facilities for the community, and the relief of poverty and other social needs, including the support of individuals and other charitable organisations and agencies involved in any or all of these.
