The Town of York Historical Society

CURATORIAL ACTIVITIES The Society's museum holds thousands of objects in its collections which relate to the postal and communications history of Canada as well as the Town of York and the early City of Toronto. It also maintains a research library on these same topics each are available to the public and researchers. EXHIBITIONS The permanent exhibits at Toronto's First Post Office are The Royal Mail and Toronto 1837. These tell the stories of communication in the early city and of the structures and natural landscape of the Town of York (1793-1834). These exhibits reflect the core purpose of Toronto's First Post Office and remain popular among visitors and residents alike. In addition the museum's website hosts four virtual exhibits. INTERPRETATION/EDUCATION Toronto's First Post Office offers education programs for groups of all ages and abilities in the form of on-and off-site and virtual programming lectures and workshops. Drop-in visitors to the museum have access to a self-guided tour which is available in more than a dozen languages. CURATORIAL ACTIVITIES The museum continues to digitize its object and archival collection. Completed records are available to the public via the museum’s website. The museum also continues to digitize the library titles which are available online. EXHIBITIONS The temporary exhibit 'Uprisings and Upsets: Toronto's Early Riots' ran throughout 2024. It featured stories and artefacts of 1830s Toronto depicting a time of upheaval and change in the city. INTERPRETATION/EDUCATION The Museum Coordinator worked to research and develop new educational programming for the museum redevelop existing programs and create virtual versions of educational programs.
