About The Hamilton Association for the Advancement of Literature Science and Art
Free Local Monthly Public Lectures We plan and present eight lectures from September to April on topics in a range of fields including the physical and health sciences literature (including history non-fiction and fiction writing and poetry) and the visual arts (including photography drama and various crafts). These are normally delivered on the McMaster University campus. Occasionally due to local weather conditions a lecture is presented online via Zoom. We also usually co-host in February March or April a lecture in the field of music organized by the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. Awards We provide four cash awards totaling $1 000 to school-age students: 1) our da Vinci Award to a competitor in the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair; 2) our Young Musician Award to a student nominated by the Dundas Valley Orchestra; 3) our Silver Quill award for a short story (fiction) in prose format; and 4) our Young Poet award. Awards 3 and 4 are given to students whom our judges selected from among the winning entries in the Hamilton Public Library’s annual Power of the Pen competition. There were no new programs.
