The food bank of waterloo region (the food bank) acquires coordinates and distributes food to the community food assistance network - a system of 100+ community organizations providing food and support to those in need. These organizations include soup kitchens community and outreach centres shelters residential service providers food hamper programs and family resource centres. Founded in 1984 the food bank was the first organization of its kind in ontario to provide emergency food support to residents across the region. The food bank has continued to evolve and maximize its collective impact distributing more than five million pounds of fresh frozen and non-perishable food to the network. Its mission is to ensure no one in the region goes hungry. The food bank also works with provincial and national partners including feed ontario and food banks canada as part of the food bank distribution services (fbds) to acquire coordinate and distribute food throughout southwestern ontario.
