The Alberni Project Society

The Alberni Project Society (TAPS) operates HMCS ALBERNI Musuem & Memorial (HAMM) a public museum in Courtenay BC to promote understanding of Canada's military history and role in WWII by conveying personal stories and events and making war artefacts available for the community to enjoy. Museum is in Units #5 (main collection) and Unit #3 (Education Centre (EC)) for lending & research library and rotating exhibits at 625 Cliffe Ave. Courtenay. Educational historic videos run continuously and special films are shown in the EC during exhibits. Donated artefacts are assessed and logged in by volunteer staff Staff receive training by workshops offered by the BC Musuems Association and other museum organizaitons. Museum provides assistance to visitors wishnig to fiind family military records. Museum is open to all Tuesdy to Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. Each summer HAMM mounts a unique temporary exhibition in the EC. In 2024 we honoured the 80th anniversary of the sinking the corvette HMCS ALBERNI in August. This was in two locations: Courtenay in a rented hall for a tribute film with distinguished speakers and guests and on the Isle of Wight with the participation of our Assistant Director Bob Sackett and local residents in Lawrence for the installation of a memorial bench facing the English Channel. The event on the Isle of Wight where the ship sank created new connections between the musuem and residents of the UK.
