About Squamish Volunteer Centre Society
The society operates the squamish welcome centre a community centre is downtown squamish with the core aim being to foster social inclusion as a method of fighting a root cause of inequality in squamish by providing a healthy and supportive environment that promotes the wellbeing of seniors families people with disabilities and indigenous communities. Specifically this program provides services activities and resources that are open to everyone in the community and are designed with the need of those who are more likely to be excluded in mind. The centre seeks to contribute to the building of a healthier and more inclusive squamish by designing services activities and events that are especially relevant for immigrants refugees and newcomers of all types. All services and activities at the centre are free and open to everyone regardless of immigration status or citizenship. The centre serves around 15 unique clients a day. 6 days a week year round. The activities of the squamish welcome centre include the squamish community bookstore; frontdesk helpdesk; the digital divide project including summer computer classes a public-access computer lab and printing; and english language learning groups. Examples of such groups include the direct outreach and support - migrant workers. This flagship program provides direct support through 1:1 appointments information sharing and more to people living or working in squamish with a closed work permit. Volunteers are encouraged to spearhead projects with such projects in the past like the chess club and a robotics bootcamp for teens.
