Second harvest is canada's largest food rescue organization and a global thought leader on perishable food recovery. Operating at the intersection of hunger relief and environmental protection second harvest rescues perishable nutrient-dense surplus food at risk of going to waste from food companies. This fresh healthy food is then re-distributed to a broad network of social service organizations in every province and territory across canada including community meal programs food banks student nutrition programs shelters centres for people suffering from mental health and addiction issues and many other frontline non-profits serving people experiencing food insecurity. In f24 second harvest provided over 87.1 million pounds of food free of charge to over 5 000 not-for-profit agencies. In turn this diverted 288 million pounds of harmful ghg emissions from entering the atmosphere. In f24 6.5 million canadians accessed food from second harvest.
