About Sault Ste Marie Helping Hands

Sault Ste Marie Helping Hands operates a 'depot' where the community can drop off gently used clothing small toys and small household items. These goods are organized by our volunteers and made available to those in need in our community. The collected items are offered to those in need for a small cash donation. Should members not be able to contribute then the goods are offered for free. We provide supports and services to anyone in need including but not limited to: The homeless; Newcomers to the city (immigrants and refugees); Students (domestic and international); Those in crisis (domestic violence fire victims etc); Those experiencing mental health and addictions; The Indigenous community and include referrals from Social Service Agencies and private social organizations. In collaboration with the Sault Career Centre 'A Helping Hand' focused on those who had demonstrated dedication and progress by completing various life skills and training programs. Acknowledging their efforts and the potential hurdles in transitioning to new opportunities our program sought to offer not just assistance but a vote of confidence in their journey. To bring this vision to fruition we approached local businesses inviting them to participate in a meaningful community effort through a 'sponsor a family' approach. This collaboration allowed us to extend financial support directly to individuals or families identified by the Sault Career Centre as ready to make a significant change but who might need a little extra help along the way. The board of SSM Helping Hands committed to assisting two families for a duration of three months e
