About Ottawa Bird Count
Plans are in the works to create an online version of the bird song identification course in 2025. No activity and the database has been archived for the moment: we conduct and coordinate scientific surveys of birds and bird habitat within and surrounding the city of ottawa. We store the data from the surveys in a publically accessible online database that we maintain (no charge for access or data-use). We analyze the data to generate estimates of bird density and other data-products which are also made available to the public. The surveys are conducted by a group of 70-90 volunteers at approximately 1000 pre-determined locations across the city. We provide educational tools and materials that are based on the findings of the data analysis from the scientific surveys. These tools and materials are developed by the ottawa bird count's volunteer scientists. All data products are freely available on the website and advertised during meetings and workshops with the public and local stakeholders. We conduct an annual bird song identification course offered at no cost to the patricipants. It is organized and run by volunteer scientists and expert naturalists. There were over 100 participants in 2015. Some participants once they feel confident enough in their new skills become volunteers to do field work as citizen scientists conducting surveys for us. We collaborate and share knowledge with our community groups and similar scientific surveys in other cities in canada and north america.
