One to One Literacy Society

One to one offers unique children's literacy programs that supports children to develop their literacy skills and confidence. Since 1989 they have provided one-to-one tutoring to children in elementary schools during regular school hours. Trained volunteer tutors work with students who are identified by their teachers as needing a boost in their literacy skills. Typically each student spends approximately 30 minutes once or twice a week with a volunteer tutor. One to one provides these children with an opportunity to practice their reading in an environment where it is okay to take risks make mistakes and learn at their own pace. The society's program runs in 140 schools in the bc lower mainland and across the province in conjunction with community organizations engaging a total of 365 volunteer tutors and over 1 700 students. In 2020 one to one began an at-home virtual tutoring program. Similar to the traditional delivery method students meet with a tutor once per week. They use digital connection tools and access books from a virtual library. Program staff identify students who are a good fit for the program. The society also works with parents to support their young readers. One to one staff deliver come read with me: a 90-minute workshop delivered either in-person or onlin that equips parents and caregivers with strategies to increase their child's confidence interest and skill in reading. They also offer a parent and caregiver newsletter which is sent quarterly by email.
