No.9 Contemporary Art & the Environment

Imagining my sustainable city is an educational outreach program focused on empowering grade 7/8 students on how to build sustainable communities. This program is delivered by no. 9’s architects/educators and takes on the structure of a 4 day design charrette that is delivered in the classroom. The curriculum is based on stem + art integrated learning in which the students learn about sustainable neighbourhood. They ten present their ideas to their city councillor for feedback. This program will continue to be delivered in toronto and hamilton and will also be delivered in thunder bay. No. 9 gardens is an initiative to build a youth sustainability and reconciliation centre which provides opportunity and education for youth post-secondary students and the public at large. Located on 40 acres of prime agricultural and near elgin ontario this centre will act as a global model and laboratory for exploring how we build sustainable local food systems. Hands on workshops and educational programs ar offered in partnership wt the dunin-deshpande queens innovation centre and the st lawrence college of skilled trades and tourism no. 9 gardens is committed to 'the culture of sustainability' and encouraging a sustainable lifestyle by educating the next generation to address the impacts of climate change. No. 9 public art is a project that raises awareness and amplifies the work of both prominent and emerging bipoc and 2slgbtq+ identifying artists collaborators partner and the public. It is a platform to foster community participation responsive to the evolving conditions that accompany covid-19. Pillars of chage supports all three pillars outlined in toronto’s public art strategy (2020/2030) – creativity community and everywhere – and is presented in partnership with the city of toronto as a signature artworxto project.
