Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society

Nikkei seniors health care and housing society operates two non-profit senior residences. New sakura-so residence (opened in 1998) and nikkei home (opened in 2002). New sakura-so is a 34 unit apartment for independent seniors and nikkei home is a 59 unit apartment providing supportive and assisted living services for its residents. The society currently has 37 members report to its membership annually at its annual general meeting. On a daily basis the society offers programs promoting independence dignity and choice for seniors. The society also provide workshops for volunteers families seniors and staff. Some of the programs the society currently offers are: crafts iki iki bento meal helping hands spiritual service with community churches walking club exercise classes cooking class flower arrangement class bingo outfight parkinson individual support and virtue service programs. Working with jcls the society is involved in administering province of bc grant for a 3-year program for japanese canadian internment survivors in lower mainland of bc impacted by the displacement and internment of march 7 1941 – april 1 1949. It’s a short term service that can help japanese canadian internment survivors navigate their health and wellness needs through government and community programs and private service. The program can assist eligible survivors to navigating both bc funded and non-funded community resources planning for health and housing needs supporting estate planning guiding them to groups and services and providing one-time limited financial assistance.
