About Mid-Island Air Search and Rescue Society

We are a volunteer and not-for-profit organization under the umbrealla of the civil air search and rescue association (casara). As such we support national and provincial air search programs. We provide aur search and rescue services to the public primarily in the mid-island region of vancouver island. Operational air searches and ground homing of electronic emergency beacons occur throughout the year. We respond to search requests for missing aircraft or to work cooperatively with provincial ground search units to provide air-search capability. We also provide air search capability for the coast guard in marine searches. Our members are certified to act as spotters on military aircraft. We have an in 2024 our organization provided 2750 volunteer hours alfter almost twelve months of intensive training casara/pep air (mid island air search and rescue) rpas (drone) team was certified by the royal canadian air force 9rcaf) for operational and safety prepaedness. It is now the island resource for remotely piloted automated system (rpas) searches. As such it can be tasked by either the joint rescue coordination centre ( jrcc victoria) for aure or marine emergencies or the emergency management climate readiness (emcr) in support of ground sar activities. Drones are used in search and rescue to : quickly scan large areas including mountains open water and urban areas. Identify potential hazards such as natural disasters mariine life and other dangers. Provide real-time visual data to rescuers. Access areas that are difficult for people to reach due to terrain or weather conditions. Casara pilots are regulated by and certified by transport canada
