Margaree Salmon Association

Our primary goal remains:to conserve salmon and trout and to preserve and restore their habitat. Msa continues to serve as 'boots on the ground' for provincial and federal departments tasked with river oversight. The projects begun in the past years continue:temperature monitoring kelt recapture completing the cabin study. Further a field tech was hired to work with our coordinator on a habitat suitability index monitoring study. A major remediation project was started on the swimming hole pool our stream crew continues to do all the roles discussed in the past years working on new tributaries and repairing older structures. As well msa attended a sportsmens' show in sydney mines the uinr salmon ceremoney at the margaree hatchery and held a world river day event at the library grounds that had been cancelled by hurricane fiona the year before members also attended the wild salmon watershed launch. During the year two newsletters were prodcued and then we rested msa continues to serve as one of the stakeholders that are in discussion with dfo regarding river closure due to high water temperatures. This year (summer 2023) the lower river had to be closed from for a brief period in july but then rain started and virtually never stopped! A large remediation on the swimming hole pool was begun but due to problems getting material and work having to stop in river in mid-september this project will have to be completed next year. There may be further remediation to do on the work formerly done below doyle's bridge. Our stream crew also assisted a committee made up of margaree associations putting up signs with the names of the various bridges over the sw and ne rivers. The discussions on the wild salmon watershed continues as does our involvement in the uinr salmon ceremoney and our plan to work on celebrating another rivers' day.
