Learning Disabilities Association of British Columbia Vernon Chapter

Advocacy – provide individuals with learning disabilities (ld) along with family members guardians and teachers information about ld and ongoing contact and support. Develop and and distribute paper and electronic information packages for new and existing clients. Tutoring – one to one tutoring with the instruction geared to the individual needs of students. Research is ongoing to provide our tutors and students’ families with current information regarding lds. Educational assessments – when necessary a certified education consultant works with the staff and provides detailed recommendations for the individual student’s instruction. This helps clarify why the student is struggling and allows better understanding of the learning difficulties and the best instructional methods to be used for the tutee. Strategies that are taught to the child during tutoring sessions are sent home for practice. Parents are encouraged to practice the strategies with their child / children at home. Outreach – a monthly newsletter is sent to members and parents giving practical concise up to date information on topics related to ld. Organization and administration. The organization relies on the work of dedicated volunteers. During this fiscal year close to 300 hours of volunteer participation allowed the association to continue its work with children and families. The total number of families benefiting from the work of the association in this fiscal year was 17. No new programs have been implemented.
