About Lake of Bays Marine Museum & Navigation Society
There was a time in the early 1900's when the world's elite travelled and experienced the beauty of the lake of bays aboard the majestic wooden steamships. The ss bigwin is the last of the original fleet of steamships. The restoration of the bigwin is now complete although the boat requires yearly maintenance. In 2014 after getting approval from transport canada the society offered both public and private cruises to enable new generations to explore and enjoy the lake of bays the way our forbearers did. The society operates a museum that contains many nautical artifacts as well as historical pictures and film for the public to view free of charge. In addition we also operated a restaurant called the galley to provide food for the ss bigwin and museum cusomters and to aid in covering some of the costs associated with operating and maintaining a wooden boat that is around 100 years old. The board members actively donate 100s of hours of their time providing support in the maintenance of the boat daily operations record keeping and accounting as well as a number of other activities.
