About Halifax Citadel Society

The halifax citadel society (hcs) hired over 85 full time and seasonal staff composed of mainly students from high schools and universities. We continue to portray soldiers that were stationed in halifax in the 19th c. And on occasion soldiers from the 1st and 2nd world wars. Some of these staff return from the previous year and are able to supervise and train new staff. Staff interpret the historical fort through guided tours period exhibits military demonstrations like foot drill sentry postings firing of period weapons and cannons. Visitors can also participate in firing our period rifles giving them a more hands on experience. Staff can easily interact with the thousands of visitors that come to the site each year. Pipers & drummers provide familiar local sounds playing historic tunes throughout the day. We offer evening ghost tours for all and birthday parties which focus the younger aged. We operate a gift shop and provide rental spaces and catering for those clients that like to provide a more unique setting for their meetings and events. Most new activities were improvements and offers to clients to existing programs. We partnered up with a couple local hotels to offer customized spirit tasting packages. This enabled larger groups to take part in our wine tasting and ghost tour activities. We also partnered with another historic group and sent several staff to their area in support of a weekend event which hopefully be an annual event. For our gift shop and catering we focus on buying local which includes from any new providers. Catering also looks towards local spirits as the first choice when offering to clients. Training is continuously updated for new staff including interacting with other staff and visitors to the fort.
