About Friends of Sable Island Society
A. We ensure the long-term conservation of Sable Island's unique ecosystem by educating the public and building a Sable Island Community. Using volunteers we create ways to bring Sable Island to people connecting them to what makes it unique to ensure that they remain aware of the need to conserve it. We provide free public events. We collaborate with researchers universities and other individuals/organizations interested in studying and protecting the ecosystem on and around the Island. We build partnerships with other organizations and individuals who are like-minded in their desire to protect Sable Island. We expand our capabilities by partnering with others including Parks Canada to protect the Island today. B. We establish educational and interpretation programs and provide materials and support for the training of students. We offer annual scholarships to students. Using volunteers we maintain a dense and comprehensive website to inform and educate readers about Sable Island and as a platform for sharing teaching aids. We produce lesson plans for Primary to Grade 12 based on the Nova Scotia public school curriculum outcomes using content related to Sable Island. C. We promote Sable Island as a platform for scientific and historical research of provincial national and international significance. We organize a conference every two years in Nova Scotia dedicated to the science and history of this unique place to promote the sharing of experiences and knowledge about the Island across disciplines creating links amongst people and ideas that will be useful for the conservation and sustainable management of the Island and other similar habitats. We collect and preserve the history of the Island to ensure knowledge is not lost and that it can be used to further an understanding of Sable Island’s local national and international importance and transform this natural and cultural history so that it is available as teaching aids to educate others in Nova
