Discovery Coast Greenways Land Trust

Since its establishment in 1996 greenways land trust has been dedicated to restoring preserving and protecting natural areas and critical habitats especially ecological and recreational greenways for the benefit of our community. Our volunteer board plays a key role in promoting environmental initiatives and collaborating with various partners. Greenways has built an outstanding reputation for fostering volunteerism and stewardship among community members and local students. In fact last year volunteers contributed over 7 000 hours to our community stewardship efforts. We actively engage with our community through volunteer opportunities local and social media email newsletters and participation in community events. Our ongoing projects include work in the campbell river estuary such as the restoration of baikie island the mill pond project(in partnership with the wei wai kim guardians) research on the impact of non-native canada geese and invasive species management. Other initiatives include riparian and foreshore restoration projects with school students supporting local streamkeeper groups guiding the strathcona local food network the fruit tree gleaning project and trail maintenance in beaver lodge forest lands through our adopt-a-trail program. Additionally we have recently partnered with the we wai kai and wei wai kum guardians to deliver the indigenous watersheds initiatives where we educate students about ecological restoration techniques and ca this year greenways has joined the western screech owl project led by the we wai kai guardians and madrone environmental. We have been actively building nest boxes and have begun installing them in the beaver lodge forest lands.
