About Canadian Transit Heritage Foundation/Fondation canadienne dupatrimoine du transport urbain
The mission of Canadian Transit Heritage Foundation (CTHF) is to be the voice and resource for Canada's public transit heritage. We promote the preservation of artifacts printed information photographs and other documentation that describe urban transit history in Canada and maintain an archived collection of such materials. We are actively involved in providing education and other support to transit systems other organizations and individuals communicating the important role of public transit in the economic growth and social development of Canada during its 150+ years of history. We prepare a quarterly newsletter for Foundation members. Every second year we publish a Street Side Guide with current urban transit fleet information and a listing of preserved historic vehicles - the 2024 edition was published in March 2024 and the latest 2026 edition is planned for release in March 2026. Other programs include historic vehicle charters which took place in Winnipeg MB and Hamilton ON during 2024 and providing information and editorial support to commemorative book projects the latest being a 264 page book published in November 2024 commemorating the Gloucester Railway Company 'G Train' cars which inaugurated service on Canada's first subway line in Toronto in March 1954. To support our commitment to extend the knowledge of public transit’s contribution to Canadian history we have maintained an archive of public transit related printed materials including maps photo images schedules brochures reports and industry publications. These materials have been donated by CTHF members and other individuals and organizations and they have significant historic value. During 2023 CTHF undertook a new program categorizing these materials as preparatory work for implementing CTHF’s project objective of creating a definitive online archive of Canadian public transit historical materials. It is planned to make the archive available to the Canadian public thro
