About Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior

Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior's mandate is to connect the public to the assets. Currently three local lighthouses No.10 Light Porphyry Island Lightstation and Trowbridge Island Lightstation on Lake Superior are all at different levels of programming. Programming takes place predominately at Porphyry Island Lightstation with several community activities during the winter months taking place in the City of Thunder Bay. Programming in the City includes a 'Speakers Series' which also has included live music and historical presentations. Ongoing programming and updates are also captured in a weekly column in the local paper about preservation progress and programming updates. At Porphyry Island programming experience is provided for youth through the Canada Summer Jobs program and Builders on Superior Shores for youth to learn about light keeping and carpentry. Families and couples also partake in a program called Host Keepers which allows people to stay and volunteer work time on the island. Programming also included some research projects into Geology or Nature Habitats. Achieving of historical information and photo's is always underway. Education through our Facebook and Website also keep the public informed on our programming progress with some content available to learn. Finally we offer tours to the public who come by charter or by private vessel to Porphyry Island and speaks about the relevance of lighthouses on Lake Superior and the story of survival in years past. Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior is working on the restoration of the No.10 Light Trowbridge Island Light station and Thunder Bay Main Lighthouse. The work also includes the development of a kiosk on Thunder Bay's Waterfront to promote education and a connection for visitors and locals as to how the lighthouse impact the community past present and future.
