CCB BC-Yukon Division’s Ongoing Program – Community Outreach & Social Integration The Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB) BC-Yukon Division is an organization run by the Blind for the blind since 1945. Dedicated to providing leadership for the blind and partially sighted to achieve their full potential through guidance education resources and public awareness. In 2024 CCB chapters continued to meet whether it was to curl picnic dragon boat along the Fraser River provide peer mentorship listen to guest speakers bowl knit review and discuss books walk or simply offer social connection. The Division held their annual in person workshops in Langley where participants learned about how Descriptive Video is created listened to blind swimmer Scott Rees talk about his swim through the Georgia Straight to fundraise for guide dogs discussed road safety with ICBC brainstormed ways to promote independent living skills for blind and low vision folks and wrapped up the two days with a trip to the local Cineplex to watch a movie that was descriptive video for all in attendance. We also held a winter sports days event in Richmond in October where participants tried their hand at curling swimming hiking and bowling. This Seniors in Motion event was made possible by support from a New Horizons grant. The Division hosts bi-weekly call in sessions via Zoom with guest speakers and topics such as electronic fraud and prevention emergency preparedness navigational apps adaptive sailing elections accessibility and more.
