Calgary Young People's Theatre Society

We kicked off our season with a full length production of CLUE JR followed by a devised piece exploring artificial intelligence called SOMEDAY (which was created by a group of youth and facilitated by a professional director). In December 2023 we presented the 10th Annual Outpatient Collective script called WHIMSY that featured clown aerial and a live band. In March of 2024 we presented an original script commissioned for our organization exploring the resiliency of kids trapped in a cave called THE INNER WORKINGS OF A CONCERT FLUTE by our Artistic Producer. This year we added a 5th show to our season that also toured to 2 different YMCAs in Calgary before ending up at our home theatre of the West Village Theatre. CYPT commissioned a local playwright to pen the play SASQUATCH SALLY. And our season ended with the 9th annual Cannonball! Festival of Youth Theatre which featured 7 brand new original works created by young people as well as an improv night (including an alumni improv evening) and 2 staged readings of a work in progress. CYPT continued to run summer camps and year round classes at 4 different locations in Calgary as well as running workshops and camps for other companies in and around Calgary. We also ran another season of PD day camps with the Green Fools. In May of 2024 CYPT seized an opportunity to take over the bay next door to the West Village Theatre with the goal to create a community maker space specifically for theatre including sound lights props costumes and set. The space is just in its beginning phase with the goal of setting up the space in the next fiscal year and the creation of programming for young people to specialize in theatrical design.
