About Brigs Youth Sail Training
We provide a unique setting in which young people take part in programs designed to develop leadership and good citizenship. Activities are centered around sail training on our square rigged sailing vessel the ts playfair (i.e. A tall ship) in our summer program youth live work and learn on board the vessel with courses lasting from 3 to 12 days. No experience is necessary and youth from a wide range of backgrounds and financial circumstances are encouraged to apply. Hard and soft skills are taught during this time focussed on the growth of leadership teamwork competency and determination. Safety of oneself fellow crew and the vessel is a core mandate. As well as sailing crew spend time on shore exploring ontario's diverse communities and coastlines. In our winter program youth participate in an ambitious program of education and maintenance. Classroom topics over seamanship crew management emergency training and leadership skills. Workshop topics include woodwork metalwork and rigging. These skills are used directly in a supervised environment to maintain the vessel in preparation for summer sailing. Although youth are our primary focus we also have a small offering of adult sailing courses for individuals and teams. Volunteers form a core aspect of all our programs. Skilled with over 80 volunteers contributing over 13 000 hours annually
