Bcihs mandate is to provide safe secure and affordable housing. Although our original and ongoing mandate is to focus on the housing needs of the urban indigenous community we have expanded our operations to include housing solutions for seniors youth women at risk persons living with mental illness and the homeless and/or homeless at risk populations. Recognizing that providing housing alone is not enough some bcihs buildings include on-site support services; in all of our housing developments we strive to help tenants connect to available resources in the community when needed. In recent years the society has embraced the social enterprise model to increase the opportunities for indigenous community it serves. One such venture is award winning skwachays lodge which aims to support indigenous arts & culture along with supporting the development of artists in the local vancouver area. Bcihs recognized the complexity in our affordable housing issues in the lower mainland and is often working on developing new integrated solutions like arts & culture employment education and communty events & program.
