Ayr Horticultural Society

The Ayr Horticultural Society (alias - North Dumfries Garden Club) had 112 members who contributed 2055 hours of volunteer time to the community. The Society held 8 monthly meetings January to May and September to November. Meetings were open to the public and featured a guest speaker who is an authority in an aspect of horticulture nature or the environment. Planters in the villages of Ayr and Roseville were planted and maintained with a new arrangement for each of the four seasons. Administration of the North Dumfries Community Garden was shared with the township. 2024 marked the 200th Anniversary of the town of Ayr. The club selected the anniversary flower the campanula and made available at cost 200 plants to the residents of the town. Ten wrap-around pots were purchased by the club and mounted in Centennial Park adding to our horticultural responsibilities. In celebration of the Bicentennial a special category was developed for the school fair and prizes provided. Students developed many creative presentations of wild flowers collected in the township. Six half-day sessions were developed and presented at the local summer day camp for children. The sessions which incorporated educational speakers and activities were well received and encouraged to continue in future years.
