About Asian Canadian Studies Society
The Asian Canadian Studies Society supported the post-production of an educational documentary film called Between Pictures: The Lens of Tamio Wakayama by director Cindy Mochizuki. The late Tamio Wakayama was a Japanese Canadian photographer who worked in the American Civil Rights Movement with SNCC and trained as a dark room photographer photographing the deep South. He returned to Canada to photograph the Japanese Canadian arts festival called the Powell Street Festival. We supported this production of the film as it serves a function to teach educate and archive a significant body of photography of several communities including Japanese Canadian but also teaches the public around racial injustice histories and cultural identity.
