Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) is a non-profit international development agency. Incorporated on July 3 1980 AKFC’s work covers two core lines of activity: programming related to international development and the acquisition and development of properties used for charitable purposes. Each of these areas are supported by separate funding streams. As part of the organization’s international development mandate AKFC supports programs in Africa and Asia which tackle interconnected issues in education health and nutrition agriculture and food security early childhood development work and enterprise civil society climate resilience and gender equality. AKFC also undertakes a range of activities to mobilize Canadians to support this mandate including fundraising campaigns that benefit from a broad base of volunteer support placements for Canadians to contribute their professional skills abroad and a robust agenda to raise awareness and encourage discussion about Canada’s role in an interdependent world among a range of audiences including youth educators development sector professionals and the general public. In 2024 AKFC launched the following new programs: 1) GPE KIX: A component of the IDRC-funded Global Education Partnership (GPE) Knowledge Innovation Exchange (KIX) project 'Delivering Responsive and Inclusive Initial Teacher Education Through Design Thinking (GPE KIX). The CAD $2.0 million 33-month (July 2024-March2027) project aims to generate knowledge about how initial teacher education can be reformed to better meet the needs of teachers and students including through a focus on teacher agency and autonomy '21st century skill' acquisition and active student-centred learning in Kenya Tanzania and Pakistan. 2) The IDRC-funded Care for All project addresses the challenges of unpaid care work in Kenya's Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) by focusing on policy and program innovations related to recognizing reducing and redistributing care w
