Aboriginal Community Justice Panels have been in operation since 1988 and are staffed by volunteers who are on standby 24 hours, 7 days a week to assist any Aboriginal / Torres Strait Islander person taken into police custody THE PRIMARY ROLE OF THE ABORIGINAL COMMUNITY JUSTICE PANELS ARE: To assist police in assuring the safety of Aboriginal persons in police custody To assist Aboriginal people in the post custodial stage To increase awareness in the Aboriginal community of the criminal justice system and sensitize criminal justice agencies to Aboriginal cultural issues
