Containers for Change is a statewide container deposit scheme that empowers the West Australian community to collect and return empty 10¢ drink containers for a refund, giving containers multiple lifecycles. Since its inception on 1 October 2020, Containers for Change has led with the focus to improve container recovery rates, while also creating employment opportunities, and empowering notforprofit organisations and charities in their fundraising efforts. As of December 2023, 2.8 billion containers have been saved from landfill and participated in the circular economy. That is $280 million returned to the people of Western Australia, with over $10 million in refunds being donated to over 5,000 charities and community groups. The scheme has increased from a recovery rate of 33% to an impressive 64% in just three years, positioning Containers for Change WA as the fastest growing container deposit scheme nationwide. This success is mirrored in the creation of over 800 jobs, including employment opportunities for individuals with a disability or those facing social disadvantage. Containers for Change WA's overarching goal is to achieve an 85% recovery rate. Coordinated efforts across several departments utilise research and a strategic approach to raise awareness and grow the scheme, introducing more ways to return 10¢ containers and participation by consumers both inside and outside of the home
