The Treaty Authority is the independent body that oversees Treatymaking in Victoria. The Treaty Authority's role is to ensure negotiations between First Peoples and the State of Victoria are a fair and just and deliver justice, prosperity and mutual respect for all Victorians. This includes addressing the significant power imbalance that exists between First Peoples and the State. The Treaty Authority supports First Peoples in Victoria through: overseeing negotiations and assisting parties to make agreements and resolve disputes in line with the Treaty Negotiation Framework. helping to build confidence and understanding of the Treaty process among First Peoples and all Victorians. This includes conducting information sessions, including On Country, to help First Peoples engage in the Treaty process on their terms. carrying out research to support and inform Treaty negotiations As one of the key players in the Treaty process, the Treaty Authority s activities address the ongoing disadvantage experienced by First Peoples by empowering First Peoples and upholding their right to selfdetermination.
