Through a culturally unique and oncountry boarding experience, Torres Strait Kaziw Meta supports students in Years 7 12 to grow into proud, confident young people who are deeply connected to their identity, culture, and community. Our boarding program provides a safe and nurturing environment that enables students from the outer islands to access secondary education on Thursday Island while remaining close to home. Our work is centred on providing comprehensive wraparound support culturally, socially, and academically. This includes: Cultural Continuity: Embedding Torres Strait Islander culture, language, and leadership into daily routines, weekend activities, and formal programs. Student Wellbeing: Ensuring emotional and mental health support through dedicated pastoral care staff and access to youth wellbeing professionals. Family and Community Connection: Maintaining strong ties with families and community Elders, including frequent engagement and culturally responsive communication. Educational Support: Monitoring academic progress and providing tutoring and mentoring through initiatives like the Bright Futures Tutoring Program. Career and Leadership Pathways: Offering programs that inspire future pathways beyond school, including leadership development, work readiness, and transition support. By creating a homelike space rooted in culture and safety, our charity directly contributes to improved educational outcomes, stronger cultural pride, and a positive sense of belonging among Torres Strait Islander youth.
