About The Trustee for the Medical Advances Without Animals Trust
MAWA worked towards its aim of advancing medical science and improving human health and therapeutic interventions without the use of animals in medical research by encouraging and incentivising universities and research institutions to develop and adopt alternative methods and technologies to replace the use of animals and animal products in medical research, product testing and education. This was done by providing grants, fellowships, scholarships, bursaries, sponsorships and prizes, plus a range of other initiatives to advance and promote nonanimal research. MAWA also conducted animal replacement seminars, promotional activities and outreach to students and medical researchers, established and funded the Replacing Animals in Medical Research Fund (RAMR) at The Australian National University (ANU) as a precursor to establishing the Australian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Research (ACAAR) at the ANU, and facilitated and channelled significant funding and other resources from third parties directly to universities and research institutions throughout Australia for a range of animal replacement science projects.
