65% of high school girls drop out of school in Kibera Slum, Kenya. One of the main reasons is they cannot afford sanitary pads. We set up microfactories, provide materials and fund wages that enable local women to manufacture sanitary pads for girls who can then continue to attend school and complete their high school education. This year there has been a new layer added to the employment of the local women to operate these microfactories. Many of the women that are employed to operate these microfactories come from families of domestic violence. This enables them to work and provide for their families and break the cycle of domestic violence while supporting school girls to stay in school with the products from their work. We also fund female mentors to visit the schools on a parttime basis to mentor the girls on how to use the sanitary pads, on personal hygiene and why it s important to stay in school. We currently distribute sanitary pads free to around 50 schools in the Kibera slums. We are now also providing materials and funds for the manufacture and distribution of sanitary pads for the disabled living in Kibera, Kenya.
