Port Albert Maritime Museum Inc

During the reporting period, the Port Albert Maritime Museum continued to preserve, interpret, and promote the maritime, cultural, and social heritage of Port Albert and the Gippsland coast. Housed in the former 1861 Bank of Victoria building one of the oldest intact structures in Gippsland the Museum maintains a unique collection that documents the region s evolution from Victoria s earliest port of entry to a thriving fishing and shipbuilding hub. Through research, exhibitions, and public engagement, the Museum advanced its mission to safeguard Port Albert s cultural heritage for future generations. This included ongoing documentation of artefacts relating to fishing, shipping, and local industries; maintaining interpretive displays about the wharf precinct s development; and contributing to regional heritage studies and conservation planning. The Museum s archival resources such as early fishermen s union minutes, the Fishermen s Cooperative records, and archaeological materials remain a vital resource for historians, heritage consultants, and community groups. The Museum also supported local tourism and education by providing guided tours, school visits, and access to maritime research materials. By preserving and interpreting artefacts tied to the wharf, fishing industry, shipwrecks, and early settlement, the Museum helped strengthen community identity and understanding of Port Albert s role in Victoria s maritime history.
