Newcastle Historic Reserve Land Manager is a community trust operating under the Crown Lands Act of 2016 to preserve three historic buildings (7490 Hunter St), of significance to Newcastle. This is achieved by commercial tenancies which provide funds to not only conserve the buildings but to provide support for NHRLM's community engagement initiative, The LockUp, a contemporary award winning art space housed in the original gaol site. NHRLM on behalf of the NSW State Government Crown Lands, is responsible for the conservation, management and cultural use of three locally listed heritage government buildings. This includes the former Newcastle Police Station and LockUp (1861) now operating as The LockUp, a contemporary arts space and community engagement hub. Revenue from the corporate leasing of 74 and 88 Hunter Street plus some areas of The LockUp building (90 Hunter Street), ensures their ongoing maintenance and preservation. The commercial leases enable engagement with a broad range of commercial business and the revenue also assists in funding the administration and activities of The LockUp. The LockUp includes a contemporary art gallery, heritage listed cells and a selfcontained apartment for artistinresidence opportunities which allow visiting artists to respond to the unique architecture and expand their practice through exhibitions, public programming and performance. The LockUp is accessible, free of charge to the public and offers diverse and inclusive programming to audiences locally, nationally and internationally. The LockUp is committed to fostering meaningful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, particularly the Awabakal and Worimi people, the traditional custodians of the land on which we operate. Additional income is sought through grants, commercial sponsorship and the highly successful Patrons Program.
