Continued collection of photographic material that depicts migrant life in the Illawarra pre and postWorld War 2 made available to the general public via the website image gallery to continue the preservation and advocacy of migrant heritage in the Illawarra. Ongoing vigilance of the NSW heritage listed former Balgownie/Fairy Meadow Migrant Hostel and advocacy for buildings and places of social and historical significance to safeguard them. Commenced support for interpretative signage at the remaining hostel huts to preserve their history for visitors, including aging former residents and for future generations. Held a free exhibition in partnership with Wollongong City Library showcasing 40 previously unpublished photographs depicting the life and times of various migrant groups during History Week as well as examples of items brought by them to Australia. Published new research on migrants and places on the website. The planning and lobbying for the region to establish a large museum that focusses on the social and industrial history of our region and the state of NSW has continued. The MHP sub committee for the proposed Museum of People and Industry has progressed, articulating the need and value of a significant museum in the region based on 5 pillars: The stories of First Australians; migrant heritage; social fabric; industrial heritage; and environment. Held a free presentation opened to the public on a lesser known preWorld War 2 Wollongong migrant and his impact on the history of the region. Provided free assistance to enquiries from the public requesting information or methodology to record their own, or a family member s migrant history. All these programs, which are open to the public, meet our purpose for the preservation, protection and promotion of migrant heritage in the Illawarra.
