About Low Isles Preservation Society Inc

LIPS is a local communitybased environmental group with an aim to protect the wildlife and landscape of Low Isles and surrounding areas through volunteer caretaking at Low Isles, participating in Pied Imperial Pigeon counts and conducting shorebird surveys, and other environmental programs as needed (e.g. assisting JCU with the longterm seagrass mapping survey). We are introducing on site marine education working on a longterm program with the Quicksilver group to create a Living Classroom utilising the refurbished former research centre on Low Island to function as an offshore classroom for local students. LIPS members hold seats on the Local Marine Advisory Council and are working on 2 projects with the QLD Museums Network to upgrade the interpretive displays and museum space on Low Isles, and to create a Maritime and Cultural precinct in Port Dougles which includes the collection of oral histories through video interviews.
