About Kelp Forest Alliance LTD
The Kelp Forest Alliance (KFA) has made significant strides in kelp forest conservation over the past year. Key achievements include: State of the World's Kelp Forests Report: KFA released the first global report card for kelp forests, assessing their health, benefits, extent, protection levels, and restoration progress. Findings indicate that while 16% of the kelp biome has some protection, only 2% is highly protected. Additionally, only 2% of the Kelp Forest Challenge has been achieved, highlighting the need for increased efforts in 24 out of 25 countries with kelp forests. Monitoring Guidelines: To evaluate the effectiveness of kelp conservation efforts, KFA developed comprehensive monitoring guidelines. These guidelines offer standardized methods to assess ecosystem health, benefits, threat levels, and community involvement, facilitating consistent data collection and global analyses. Site Selection Framework: KFA organized a workshop at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) in Santa Barbara, California, bringing together experts to develop an effective and ethical framework for selecting optimal sites for kelp conservation. Global Engagement: The alliance has expanded its reach, now encompassing 27 countries, 320 organizations, and 570 individuals dedicated to kelp forest conservation. Outreach and Advocacy: KFA actively participated in 16 talks and presentations, contributed to 5 scientific papers, produced 2 key reports, and engaged in 10 national and international conferences. They have collaborated with 4 national governments and reached over 6,000 web users, raising awareness and fostering global collaboration.
