YIMBY (Yes In My Backyard) 2024 has focused on scaling up, consolidating systems and exploring long term sustainability options. YIMBY is a community scale, decentralised composting program and climate action that aims to: prevent organics entering landfill reduce carbon emissions from landfill regenerate local soils through the production of high quality compost build resilient and connected neighbourhoods upskill the community to (re)cycle food scraps into soil This year has been very successful as we have doubled our capacity again and are working on continuing to increase our reach to more neighbourhoods. The infographic attached demonstrates our environmental impact in alignment with our aims. We made a short film to demonstrate community impact. A summary of additional activities Four compost workshops were conducted and 45 people trained in our unique Continuous Hot Composting method. A weekly compost conversation' column was published in the local paper to upskill our community. 52 compost turns were completed by GYMby volunteers with the 27 YIMBY compost hubs between June December. Each turn was attended to by at least two, and sometimes three GYMBY volunteers. Each turn helps to create nutrient dense compost for going back into local food growing, an effective local climate action. YIMBY was filmed to be on Gardening Australia in May 2025 which will hopefully inspire other communities. Discussions with Mount Alexander Shire Council and the Victorian State Government and other relevant organisations continue in relation to trialing YIMBY as more local and climate friendly alternative to FOGO (Food Organics Garden Organics collection truck).
