Fortem Australia was established in 2019 to provide mental health and wellbeing support to National Security Agencies and enhance their capacity to respond better to crimes, under the Proceeds of Crime Act. This is where our social connection and wellbeing activities started. Following the devastating Black Summer bushfires of 20192020, Fortem quickly adapted to extend our support to all first responders and their families and expand our services to include clinical support and Career Management. The vital need for these services was demonstrated as we saw a rapid increase in demand, and funding was provided by Commonwealth agencies that have since come together to form the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The COVID19 pandemic reiterated the importance of social connection for first responders and their families. Once again, Fortem was able to identify and service this need, adapting wellbeing activities to meet restrictions and maintain connectedness through periods of social distancing and isolation. Since then, Fortem has continued collaborating with first responder agencies, the National Emergency Management Agency and various levels of government to deliver critical services to first responders and their families, equipping them with the tools needed to respond with resilience in the face of tough conditions. Compounding natural disasters and critical events have led to an increase in demand for the services Fortem provides, and we continue to adapt to meet this need. We have proudly supported thousands of first responders and their families through our services to enhance resilience and bolster our emergency service workforce. Fortem will continue to advocate for, and support the mental health and wellbeing of first responders and their families as they respond to the call and continue to protect our communities. Because, when we support first responders, we support every Australian.
