Coolamon Community Incorporated

Overall mission: To make a difference at the very start of life for Aboriginal mums and babies. Main aim: To get a Coolamon gift to all Aboriginal mums who need it. How we do this: Working with partners (corporate and philanthropic) to acquire the items for the Coolamon gift. This gift provides a new Aboriginal mother with everything materially that she needs to care for baby for the first 6 weeks. This gift is given to the new mum by her trusted, culturally safe, Aboriginal Healthcare Service. This healthcare service partnership entices mothers to appear earlier and more frequently in pregnancy for prenatal appointments, which results in better outcomes for mother and baby, as established by research. Further, the Coolamon gift is utilised as an educational tool for mothers to learn about safe sleeping, dressing baby, wrapping baby, feeding baby, breastfeeding and more, in trusted and Women's business settings. This prepares the Aboriginal women involved for motherhood in a holistic way, reducing the number of removed infants upon birth as well as reducing birth alerts for the women.
