About Community For Coastal & Cassowary Conservation Inc

In 2024, the Community for Coastal and Cassowary Conservation (C4) made significant strides in advancing its mission to protect and restore the unique biodiversity of the Cassowary Coast, with a particular focus on the endangered Southern Cassowary. Habitat Protection and Restoration: C4 successfully completed the acquisition of the Gurrbum Nature Refuge, transforming previously unproductive land into a thriving biodiverse habitat. This initiative enhanced wildlife connectivity across the landscape. Additionally, the purchase and protection of the Djarawong property further bolstered habitat corridors, particularly in the Smiths Gap area . Cassowary Conservation Efforts: Operating under a contract with the Queensland Government's Department of Environment and Science, C4 managed the Garners Beach Cassowary Recovery Facility. Throughout the year, several injured, sick, and orphaned cassowaries were rehabilitated and released back into the wild. Notably, one cassowary found a new home at Fleays Wildlife Park on the Gold Coast . Community Engagement and Education: C4's Environmental Display Centre and Native Plant Nursery continued to serve as educational hubs, attracting both locals and visitors. The Norm Byrnes Arboretum saw enhancements with increased signage to aid species recognition. Collaborative efforts with local schools and international universities facilitated sustainability education, while communitydriven activities like beach cleanups and workshops fostered environmental stewardship . Advocacy and Awareness: The organisation remained vigilant against ongoing threats such as habitat clearing and roadrelated wildlife fatalities. C4 advocated for increased driver awareness and improved roadside conditions to mitigate cassowary roadstrikes. Furthermore, the organisation contributed to the functionality of the 'Cassowary Bridge' over the Bruce Highway by supplying and planting vegetation, aiming to make it an effective wildlife crossing . Technological Advancements: In a bid to enhance community involvement and data collection, C4 launched an upgraded website featuring a wildlife monitoring programme. This platform allows locals and tourists to report cassowary sightings, contributing valuable data to conservation efforts . Through these multifaceted initiatives, C4 has reinforced its commitment to environmental education, habitat and wildlife protection, and ecological sustainability, aligning closely with its core mission and objectives.
