The foundation supports the charitable sector by making grants to qualified donees that operate in the areas of education conservation neuroscience microbiome research and scientific research in canada's north. The qualified donees that the foundation funds includes other canadian registered charities and listed universities outside of canada. In addition to its principal commitments the foundation makes a number of director-initiated and executive management-initiated grants each year. Due to its focused grantmaking the foundation does not accept unsolicited applications for grants. In 2022 the foundation launched a time-limited innovation challenge focused on supporting sustainable food systems in canada. This six-year competition only provides grant funding to qualified donees.
