Ukrainian Museum of Canada of the Ukrainian Women'S Association of Canada - Manitoba Branch Inc.

The museum was open 10:00am to 4:00pm tuesday to saturday june through august or by appointment. We hired two students funded by canada summer jobs grants to be an interpetive guide and curatorial assistant. The volunteer board meets regularly on thursday to research conserve and catalogue new acquisitions and to greet visitors. We have 20 volunteers and supporters who met for 1598 hours in the fiscal period. The museum gift shop offers unkrainian themed merchandise. The museum produces regular newsletters to communicate with members and supproters. Board members participate in professional development programs through cci and amm. We continue to host group tours throughout the year. The museum produced an exhibit titled 'finding a new home' about manitoba's first wave of ukranian settler 1895 to 1914. The exhibit dispalyed agricultural implements trunks containing hand woven clothing seeds and personal items brough from ukraine. The exhibit portrayed the early pioneer homestead school and church. The exhibit included the relationship between the early homesteaders and the nearby first nations peoples. The museum was also created a travelling exhibit 'embroidery tells a story' consisting of eight pannels with images of ancient ukrainian traditional embroidery with accompanying text. The exhibit shows how ukrainian embroidery has been popularized. The museum received assisstance from the provincial government for this exhibit. It is now on display at the alberta council for the ukrainian arts in edmonton and will later travel to the ukrainian museum in calgary.
