About Van Diemen Light Railway Society Incorporated
The Don River Railway is a not for profit, volunteer owned and operated, tourist railway and museum in Don, a suburb of Devonport, Tasmania. The Railway was established in 1973 with passenger services commencing in 1976. In addition to providing a unique, tourist railway experience, Don River Railway delivers on its social purpose in supporting, training and providing work experience for long term unemployed people in north west Tasmania, predominantly, but not solely, middle age men. Don River Railway has approximately 80 regular volunteers with an average age of about 63. The organisation provides an avenue for many retirees and older unemployed people who are required to undertake volunteer work in lieu of job search, as well as the provision of services for many special need groups and their clients.
